How does powder coating work?

As one of the reliable finishing options, powder coatings are the first choice of manufacturers and are widely used in many industries. Powder spraying is a multi-step process. The process usually consists of preparation, application and curing stages. At least, you need a spray gun, a spraying room and a curing furnace for the spraying process. Powder coating is to apply powder material on the preheated substrate surface.


Surface preparation stage

The substrate surface must be prepared and treated before any powder coating is used. This is to ensure that the parts are free of dirt, dirt and debris. Improper treatment of substrate surface area may affect the bonding of coating powder on parts. It may also affect the overall high quality of the surface.


In the rapid prototyping industry, some actions in this stage include fuzzing, cleaning, sandblasting, etching and drying. In most cases, the manufacturer will use tools such as sandblasting room, cleaning terminal and drying furnace. Weakly alkaline or neutral cleaners in impregnated containers help to remove oil, deposits or solvents from the surface area of the part.


On the other hand, the cleaning station can also be used. The equipment can spray parts with water, detergent or various other pretreatment solutions. Therefore, it facilitates chemical preparation or cleaning of the surface prior to the powder spraying procedure.


The sandblasting chamber uses pressurized liquid (usually compressed air) in a closed area to push abrasive products towards the surface of components. The abrasive material can be coarse sand, sand or particles. As a result, the abrasive removes surface debris and produces a cleaner and smoother surface area to use a powder cover. The drying oven also helps evaporate water or wash or clean options on components.


Powder coating stage

Suppliers usually use two main methods for powder covering procedures. They are: electrostatic deposition and fluidized bed powder coverage.


For your custom metal parts, electrostatic spray deposition technology helps to use finished products. The application uses a powder feeder, a powder spraying chamber and an electrostatic spray gun. The spraying room is the workplace where powder materials are sprayed on parts.


This area can also be used as an air filter and an over spray safety device. In this technique, the spray gun uses an electric charge before the fluidized powder product is placed on the substrate. With ESD, you can use a unique recycling system to collect any type of over sprayed products. These products can be recycled for future powder coatings.


In this case, the first step is to preheat the parts to be layered and then immerse them in the powder material in the fluidized bed. In some cases, beaked powder fragments can be introduced before the component passes through the fluidized bed.


Curing stage

The characteristics and specificity of the curing phase of powder coatings depend on the method used. ESD coated parts must be cured in a powder curing furnace. The temperature and time used for curing will depend on the size, thickness and shape of the component. Typically, an oven temperature between 325 and 450 degrees Fahrenheit takes ten minutes to about an hour to cure. Therefore, smaller machined parts will require less curing time and less hot air for proper curing. On the other hand, the preheating of fluidized bed curing parts provides a good curing environment.
